Me: I love you, too.

And since I thought that Michael could, too—the guy was a cupid; he lived for people finding love—I showed him my message.

And he smiled at me. A real one.

Sure he was still sad, but he just got a big ol’ reminder that love was here in the world, strong and thriving. It was staying, and whatever else was happening in the world, that wouldn’t change.

Who Said Criminal Minds Was a Waste of Time?

Michael’s metabolism was terrifying.

By the time our first appointment was closing in, he was completely sober.

His short-lived drinking spree seemed to have had its desired effect. He’d soaked up the booze, mourned the unexpected and deeply troubling turn of events, and was now ready to catch him some bad cupid.

Star had long since departed, leaving the three of us to our nefarious nighttime activities. It was one thing to give us information on the sly, quite another to accompany us on our prohibited task.

Michael was all in, because this was his case and it seemed the Society held little sway over him.

I apologized to Boone before we left the house for involving him in shenanigans that weren’t sanctioned by the Society, but that had just gotten me an enthusiastic tail wag.

“We ready to do this?” I asked Michael and Boone after we’d all loaded up in the Grand Cherokee.

I felt like a coach before a big game, and that impression was reinforced when they both replied in the affirmative.

Austin traffic was nonexistent this late at night, and I’d left time in our schedule for a short pep talk, so… “All right then. We go in quick. We go in quiet. Then we’re outta there. Let’s do this.”

That was it. That was my pep talk.

It’d have to do, because that was all I had.

But Michael’s reply—“Count me in, coach.”—made me laugh.

And Boone actually let loose an excited bark.

It was a little crazy. I felt like my emotions were yo-yoing all over the place.

I’d been bored, without any case leads on the horizon. I blinked and three women were murdered, and I had a case. I blinked again and my client who’d been doing a good impression of a homeless man with a drinking problem had turned into a kind-hearted saint. Then I met his two yahoo friends, then found out cupids are angelic in the need to help others find love…except for the one who’s killing women.

It was a lot.

Even for a person who’d had a lot of experience with ups and downs recently, dealing with becoming a mutated vampire being just the beginning. And I wasn’t about to forget that one of those downs involved narrowly avoiding death courtesy of Anton’s blade.

Michael cleared his throat. “I think you just passed the house.”

“Ah. Thanks.”

Mind on the task at hand. At least I’d been paying attention enough to follow my mapping navigation’s instruction.

I could do this.

We could do this.
